Our Philosophy & Vision
We are raising people of the future
Our philosophy is built on strong connections, cultural respect and a genuine commitment to each child as an individual. We put the child at the centre of everything, following their curiosity, listening to their ideas and creating the conditions for them to grow into confident, capable people.
Our Philosophy
What this looks like every day:
• We follow each child’s interests and urges, building learning around what genuinely excites them
• We bring Te Reo Māori and Tikanga Māori into our daily routines - naturally and meaningfully
• We celebrate every culture in our community, with whānau as active partners in learning
• We actively practise Whakawhanaungatanga - the deep building of meaningful relationships between tamariki, whānau and kaiako
• We use our outdoor environment as a living classroom, connecting children to the natural world
• We build resilience, self-control and a love of learning that will serve children for life
He Ahurei Te Katoa — Where Everybody Is Somebody
Our vision shapes everything we do. We want every child at Pūkeko Preschool Claudelands to grow into a person who:
Our Vision
• Is happy, confident and proud of who they are as an individual
• Can cope with change and challenges with resilience and self-control
• Knows how to ask for help — and how to give it
• Builds strong, healthy and respectful relationships with others
• Feels pride in Te Ao Māori and in their own cultural identity and whakapapa
• Recognises, respects and finds joy in the diversity of other cultures
• Has a genuine love of learning and the confidence to aim high in life
• Understands that their voice matters - and has the strength to use it
These aren’t goals for school. These are foundations for life. And we start building them from your child’s very first day with us.
Learning that follows your child’s lead
We believe children are natural-born learners. Our role as Kaiako is not to fill them with knowledge, it’s to create the right conditions for every child to discover, explore and build deep confidence in their own abilities.
Our curriculum is guided by Te Whāriki, New Zealand’s early childhood curriculum, and is grounded in play-based, child-led learning. We observe your child, identify what genuinely excites them, and design rich learning experiences around those passions.
What this looks like in practice:
• Kaiako observe and record each child’s emerging interests, strengths and learning goals
• Individual learning journeys built around your child — not a fixed programme
• Deep, meaningful conversations with babies, toddlers and preschoolers to grow language every day
• Rich outdoor learning environments that connect tamariki with the natural world
• Tuakana-Teina relationships where older children support and guide younger tamariki
• Creativity, curiosity and independent thinking nurtured in every space
• Children are supported to persevere, problem-solve and take pride in their own growth
• Te Reo Māori woven into daily communication as a living, breathing part of who we are
This is early childhood education in Hamilton that truly reflects Aotearoa New Zealand — and that prepares every child for a confident, curious and connected future.
